Best Snorkeling Spots Around Gili Meno

The Nest (Gili Meno Underwater Statues)

The best-known snorkeling attraction on Gili Meno is "The Nest", an underwater sculpture installation created by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor and installed in 2017. It consists of 48 life-size human figures arranged in a circle on the sandy seabed, designed to act as an artificial reef base that corals gradually grow onto over time.

• Location: off Gili Meno's west coast, near the BASK resort, roughly 50–100 metres offshore.
• Depth: approximately 3 to 6 metres, making it accessible to confident snorkelers as well as divers — some visitors are able to see the statues clearly from the surface on calm, clear days.
• How to reach it: you can swim directly out from the beach near BASK if you're staying close by, or join a snorkeling boat trip that stops at the site (common if you're staying on Trawangan or Air and visiting for the day).
• Best time to visit: early morning, ideally close to low tide, when the water tends to be calmest and clearest and the site is least crowded — it gets busy from around mid-morning onward.

Etiquette note: the corals and sponges growing on the statues are fragile. Look and photograph, but don't touch or stand on the figures.

The Surrounding Reef

Beyond the statues, Gili Meno's coastline offers snorkeling almost all the way around the island, with a healthy coral reef running along much of the shore. A typical entry from the beach takes you across a stretch of sandy shallows and seagrass, then over coral in slightly deeper water, before reaching a reef drop-off further out. This broader area is known for:

• Sea turtles — both green sea turtles and hawksbill turtles are regularly spotted along Gili Meno's reef.
• Turtle Point, on the island's northeast side, is a commonly cited spot for turtle sightings, though it tends to attract more boat traffic than the statue site.
