The Logic Behind This Route

This itinerary works because Padang Bai (for the Gilis) and Sanur (for Nusa Penida) are both accessible from South Bali or Ubud without excessive backtracking, and the fast boat crossings themselves are short enough that they don't eat the whole day if you plan around morning departures. The structure below front-loads the islands, since they benefit most from calm morning seas, and leaves Bali-based days more flexible.

Day 1: Arrive in Bali, Settle In

Land in Bali and head to your first base — Ubud or South Bali both work well as a starting point. Keep the day light after a long-haul flight; a short walk, an easy dinner, and an early night set you up for the crossing ahead.

Day 2: Fast Boat to Gili Trawangan

Transfer to Padang Bai Harbour for a morning fast boat departure (roughly 1.5–2 hours crossing). Spend the afternoon settling in, renting a bicycle, and doing a loop of the island before catching sunset from the west coast.

Day 3: Gili Islands — Snorkeling and Island Hopping

Spend the day snorkeling around Gili Trawangan, then take a short inter-island boat (10–15 minutes) to see Gili Meno's underwater statues or spend a few hours on the calmer pace of Gili Air. Return to Trawangan for the evening.

Day 4: Fast Boat Back to Bali, Transfer to Sanur or South Bali

Take a morning fast boat back to Padang Bai, then transfer to Sanur (roughly 1–1.5 hours) to reposition for the Nusa Penida crossing the next day. If you have a driver, consider routing through East Bali for a stop at Tirta Gangga or Sidemen along the way.

Day 5: Nusa Penida Day Trip

Take an early boat from Sanur (roughly 30–45 minutes) to Nusa Penida. Spend the day covering the island's west-coast highlights — Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, and Angel's Billabong — with a driver who knows the route and timing, since the island's roads are slow and winding. Return to Sanur by evening.

Day 6: Bali Day Tour — Culture or Adventure

With the boat crossings behind you, use this day to explore inland Bali. Depending on your interests, this could be a cultural day around Ubud's temples and rice terraces, an East Bali cultural route through Sidemen and Tenganan, or an adventure day with waterfalls and trekking.

Day 7: Free Day and Departure

Keep the final day flexible for last-minute shopping, a spa visit, or simply relaxing before your flight. If your departure is in the evening, this is also a good day for one more short activity closer to South Bali.
